Illinois bill to confiscate guns from young Americans quickly gains steam — even from some Republicans

The push for more restrictive gun laws is gaining momentum in Illinois.

The state’s House of Representatives passed a bill last week that would require gun owners ages 18-20 to hand over or “transfer” ownership of their “assault weapons” under threat of misdemeanor offense charges, Fox 2 reports.

The proposed legislation is now under consideration in the Illinois General Assembly’s upper chamber, introduced by Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago). Over the last week, it has gained seven co-sponsors.

Among the Senate sponsors is Sen. Jim Oberweis (R-Sugar Grove), the Republican who ran against US Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) in 2014.

During that race, the NRA endorsed Oberweis and gave him an “A” rating.

HB 1465, authored by Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg), would prohibit anyone under 21 from purchasing .50 caliber rifles and cartridges or attachments.

Owners who do not meet the age requirements would have 90 days to transfer ownership, Fox 2 reports.

The NRA spoke out against HB 1465, saying it would prohibit “commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms” and bar adults under 21 from owning magazines carrying more than 10 rounds.

“In addition, language in the bill would prohibit out-of-state visitors from being present in Illinois for longer than 24 hours with such firearms or standard capacity magazines,” the NRA wrote.

Mussman told critics that the bill would not amount to the confiscation of property. Persons caught violating the law would be charged with a misdemeanor offense, but authorities would not visit homes to pick up guns.

The bill was a response to the Feb. 14 shooting at a Parkland, Fla. high school that left 17 dead.
