Suspicions between the UK and Russia are mounting in the aftermath of a recent attack on British soil.
Twenty-one people received treatment after being exposed to a “nerve agent” in what some believe was an assassination attempt on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal, the Salisbury Journal reports.
Skripal, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter, Yulia, were found slumped over a public bench near a Salisbury shopping center on Sunday.
According to the Journal, 21 people exposed to the undisclosed chemical agent received varying degrees of treatment.
Among those hospitalized were an off-duty doctor and nurse, who stopped when they saw the father and daughter vomiting and having a fit on the street.
The doctor reportedly placed Yulia on the ground in a recovery position, opening her airways so she could breathe. Eventually, paramedics arrived and continued treatment.
The doctor who provided first aid is said to be feeling fine.
Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, the first police officer on the scene, was in “serious condition” early Thursday. CNN later reported that Bailey was “talking and engaging.”
Skripal and his daughter remain in a critical state.
UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd called the incident “attempted murder in the most cruel and public way,” per The Irish Times.
Rudd also called the attack “cruel” and “brazen,” but cautioned against “speculation,” urging Britons to “allow the police to carry on their investigation.”
CNN reported a representative for the Russian embassy in London as calling the news “rather worrying” and describing Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson’s response as “strongly anti-Russian.”
Johnson vowed a “robust response” should the Kremlin’s involvement be proven.
It is believed that Skripal has lived in the UK since 2010, when he was released from a Russian jail as part of a “spy swap.”
Skripal, a former Russian military intelligence officer, spied on behalf on the UK for several years. Yulia is thought to be one of the few remaining member of Skripal’s family, as his wife, son, and older brother have all died within the last six years.
