Surely members of the Utah House of Representatives expected the merciless social mockery that followed the release of a rap parody of the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song.
But from the looks of the caption that accompanied the release, it seems the – mostly Republican – lawmakers were pretty darn proud of the finished product.

“Our representatives have taken the time to explain how a law is made…with a surprise twist,” the Utah House of Representatives announced. “Give it a listen and share so all your friends can know how laws are made!”
The nearly 90-second video, which is set to the theme song from the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” the 1980’s sitcom starring Will Smith, features a collection of the state’s lawmakers explaining how a bill becomes law – by rapping about it.
And it’s as awful as you’d expect.
“Now this is a story all about how our bills get flipped into a law. I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there. I’ll tell you how a bill becomes law in this our chamber,” the state representatives attempt to rap, each line presented by a different House member. “In a legislator’s mind an idea is raised. In the law book is where they spend most of their days. Drafting out, maxin’ out, hardly relaxing all cool.”
The video concludes with Rep. John Knotwell sticking his tongue out.
The Twitter reaction was scathing, with many calling it the “cringiest” thing ever seen.

Definitely a video that should come with a warning label, the Salt Lake County Health Department offered up a suggestion to label the video as a “public health hazard.”
