In the aftermath of the deadly mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida that tragically claimed the lives of at least 17 people, the American people have been asking themselves “what went wrong?”
The U.S. media have been focusing almost entirely on the weapons possessed by Nikolas Cruz, the perpetrator who confessed to authorities about carrying out the atrocity. It has spent countless hours debating what firearms should be restricted from law-abiding Americans in order to hypothetically prevent such mass shootings from occurring again.
At a CNN townhall dedicated to airing out grievances about mass shootings such as at Parkland, however, Sheriff Steve Israel pressed addressed questions about why the FBI failed to follow up on reports that Cruz has been making threats on social media, especially Youtube. Cruz reportedly said he wanted to be a “professional school shooter.”
“In Florida, we call it a Baker Act,” Israel said. “It allows us to take an individual to be, against their will, involuntarily, to go to a mental health facility and be treated.”
In a heated exchange with NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch, Israel pressed his case that law enforcement should have more authority to commit mentally disturbed individuals against their will after proper authorization from psychological and judicial authorities.
“Thirty-nine visits did not meet that standard? 39 visits, assaulting students, assaulting parents, taking bullets and knives to school did not meet that standard?” she asked, referring to reports that is how many times law enforcement had been called to deal with Nikolas Cruz.
Israel denied the report was true, even though it was ironically first reported on CNN.
“They were threatened with death. They were threatened that they were going to bleed. They were threatened that they were going to be killed,” Loesch peppered Israel, who was an honorary Hillary Clinton campaign official.
Now, there are even more questions about how Broward County law enforcement responded to the Parkland school shooting.
At a press conference on Thursday, it was revealed that armed law enforcement never went into the school during the shooting rampage. As reported by News 7 Miami:
According to Israel, Deputy Scot Peterson was on campus at the time of the shooting that killed 17 people.
However, Israel said video showed the deputy arriving at the west side of the building where the shooting took place. Peterson then took up a position but “never went in.”
Sheriff Israel furthemore said that the revelation about Peterson made him “sick.”
The sheriff said the revelation made him “devastated, sick to my stomach.”
When asked what the deputy should have done, Israel replied, “Went in. Address the killer. Kill the killer.”
The officer at the scene, Deputy Scot Peterson, was suspended without pay pending an investigation, but then subsequently resigned.
“I’m in shock that he hid outside, because we saw people like Feis, who risked his life, and Hixon, who risked his life, and they don’t even have guns,” Parkland student Jenna Korsten said. “If he’s the one with a gun, he should be the one out there with the gun trying to protect the kids. Why was he hiding outside? It just makes no sense to me whatsoever. I mean it just doesn’t make sense to me at all.”
This is all very useful information for the public to know, particularly following a White House listening session and CNN town hall that resulted in a relentless push for gun control, even as a law enforcement who was called to the scene of the mass shooting reportedly never went in and never dealt with the shooter.
