Some students are pushing back at demands for gun control legislation in the wake of the tragic Parkland, Fla. shooting.
A Stoneman Douglas High School student who personally knew alleged shooter Nikolas Cruz told MSNBC’s Brian Williams late Wednesday that the mass-killing of 17 people would not have been averted with stricter gun laws.

A student named Brandon responded to Williams’ question about what lawmakers can do stop atrocities like the one seen on Wednesday, in which the shooter fired at students with an AR-15 rifle.
“Gun-wise, I don’t think there’s any way to prevent it,” Brandon said. “You outlaw guns, it just creates higher demand for it.”
The student then suggested addressing the issue of mental health.
“I think it has to do with mental health, though. If he’s been expelled three different times from three different schools, I think he should be helped out.”
Cruz was expelled from Stoneman Douglas High School for disciplinary reasons. Brandon told Williams that he once worked on a class project with Cruz, and that the future shooting suspect recounted having been expelled from two private schools.
The 19-year-old suspect, currently charged with 17 counts of murder, frequently posted photos of guns and knives on his social media accounts.
Cruz was described by those who knew him as a “loner” and “very quiet.” One former classmate told WJXT that “everyone predicted” he would one day shoot up the school.

The suspect’s parents are both deceased. According to CNN, Broward Sheriff’s deputies were called to Cruz’s home 39 times since 2010.
The sheriff’s calls ranged from reports of a mentally ill person to child/elderly abuse and domestic disturbance.
The FBI in September investigated a Youtube user named “Nikolas Cruz” who said he was “going to be a professional school shooter.”
The Bureau stopped its probe when it was unable to identify the user, FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Lasky said on Thursday.
On Saturday, President Trump accused the FBI of having “missed all of the many signals” that would have allowed them to prevent the massacre.
