In first official Senate ad, Mitt Romney takes hard swipes at Trump

Mitt Romney wants to go to Washington, and he’s not hiding how he feels about the president.

Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts Governor who lost his 2012 presidential bid against Barack Obama, officially declared his candidacy for US Senate from Utah on Friday, releasing a campaign video that contained veiled criticism of President Trump.

In the video, Romney, who is running to occupy the seat Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) will vacate upon his retirement at the end of this term, contrasted his adopted state of Utah with the Trump administration’s policies in Washington.

“Utah welcomes legal immigrants from around the world, Washington sends immigrants a message of exclusion,” he said.

In an apparent dig at President Trump’s penchant for engaging in feuds with other public figures, Romney declared that at the Utah Capitol Building, “people treat others with respect.”

The former governor also touted Utah’s economy.

“Utah has a lot to teach the politicians in Washington. Utah has balanced its budgets. Washington is buried in debt. Utah exports more abroad than it imports. Washington has that backwards.”

Romney, a fierce critic of President Trump during the 2016 presidential election, is popular in Utah. A poll from last month put his support at 64 percent, versus his Democratic opponent’s 19 percent.

Not everyone is happy about a Romney candidacy. Utah GOP chairman Rob Anderson told the Salt Lake Tribune Romney isn’t the best “fit” for Utah because he only moved to the state following his failed presidential campaign.

“I think he’s keeping out candidates that I think would be a better fit for Utah because, let’s face it, Mitt Romney doesn’t live here, his kids weren’t born here, he doesn’t shop here,” Anderson said.

The state GOP chairman later apologized to Romney in private.

Whether or not a Senator Romney will be good news for President Trump, it’s a prospect that’s highly likely to become a reality.
