You know your priorities are mixed up when you find yourself rooting for a murderous dictatorship.
On the Monday edition of ABC’s “The View,” actress Whoopi Goldberg criticized Vice President Mike Pence for refusing to stand for North Korea’s athletes as they entered the stadium at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Goldberg excoriated the vice president, arguing he should have shown “respect” for the authoritarian regime that groups like Human Rights Watch have accused of committing murder, enslavement, torture, sexual violence, and other forms of human rights abuses.
Co-host Sunny Hostin first asked, “I thought that Mike Pence said that it was inappropriate to make political statements at sporting events? Wasn’t he that guy who walked out of the football game because people were kneeling and not standing?”
After a back and forth between the members of the panel, Goldberg added her voice with a call for Vice President Pence to stand for North Korea’s athletes.
“We have to be respectful because what we do know about politicians is they end up sitting with people that you and I say well, why are they sitting with them? So if you’re in Korea, you need to stand up. You need to stand up and show respect!”
The conversation then turned to the moment athletes from the two Koreas marched under the unification flag, prompting Goldberg to say:
“He should have given enough — had enough respect to say you know what, maybe they are doing a good thing for themselves and maybe we can sit down with them at some point, but you can’t have it both ways.”
Co-host Joy Behar also berated Pence, then rebuked President Trump who allegedly “reveres Russia” and is “un-American.”
“And so it’s kind of hypocritical for Pence, all I hear from Trump is how great Russia is. He never says a bad word about Putin. That is un-American to me…Pence is working for a man who reveres Russia, who never says anything about Russia and Russia has many human rights violations. Pence is working for that man and backs that man up. So then he’s a hypocrite.”
Meghan McCain, the program’s lone conservative, disagreed with her co-hosts, and expressed dismay at CNN’s favorable coverage of Kim Yo-Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.
McCain accused CNN of “normalizing” the Kim regime’s abusive government, but Goldberg fired back:
“[I]f you’re going to go over there, you’re going to represent the United States. Either don’t go and say you know what, we can’t normalize it…If you’re going to represent the country you have to make a decision to either go and stand and do what you need to do like we would all have to do or don’t go. Because the minute you go, you’re normalizing it.”
Many liberals cheered Kim Yo-Jong after she appeared to give Pence a “deadly side eye” at the Olympic games.
Meanwhile, the mainstream media largely ignored Pence’s efforts to bring attention to North Korea’s abuses, including meeting with North Korean defectors.
The media also glossed over the presence of Fred Warmbier, whose son, Otto, died due to the brutal treatment he received at the hands of the Kim regime.
