Folks, you just can’t make this stuff up.
In a classic case of pot meets kettle, a Utah lawmaker who supported stronger anti-prostitution penalties reportedly has resigned for …
Wait for it …
Hooking up with a prostitute, and using taxpayer funds to pay for the hotel room, no less.
According to a Daily Mail report, call-girl Brie Taylor claims she was paid $250 by former Republican State Representative Jon Stanard not once, but twice at Salt Lake City’s Fairfield Inn.
The one-hour sessions reportedly occurred in June and August of 2017, days confirmed by Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes as “legislative days,” and included intercourse and oral sex.
Although lawmakers will typically submit hotel stays for reimbursement while on official legislative business, it was unclear whether his tryst with a prostitute would disqualify Stanard from claiming those days.
“If there has been an abuse of public funds or if public funds were used in a way that’s inappropriate, we would,” Hughes told Daily Mail. “I don’t have solid answers for those things. I would need to have a way that I would know conclusively that that is the case.”
The 43-year-old Stanard, a political conservative who reportedly asked Taylor to bring “toys” or “accessories,” or maybe a “corset” to their meetings, is a married father of three who just last year voted to increase the penalty for soliciting a prostitute to $2,500.
Even Stanard’s lawyer seemed flummoxed.
Devin Nunes just clarified why Trump White House won’t ‘release the memo’ from Democrats… yet
“Given the current climate in this country with misconduct allegations and the way things are happening in the media right now, there isn’t any explanation that my client could give that would overcome the shadow of these allegations,” attorney Walter Bugden told Daily Mail before confirming that the lawmaker “has resigned his office.”
From the New York Post:
Taylor — a mom of a 10-year-old boy — claimed that Stanard first approached her on March 7, 2017.
“Looking at your website. Can you meet?” he allegedly wrote, according to the Daily Mail.
In another text, he added: “Would need to be tonight. Only in town a little. Anytime. Can do in or out. At hotel in downtown SL.”
They exchanged several messages, but Taylor was unavailable because her son was sick. He texted her again the following month but she was again unavailable, according to the outlet.
The two met for the first time at the Fairfield Inn by Marriott in downtown Salt Lake City on June 20, 2017, the site reported.
“I already knew who he was because I screen all my clients using a phone number service and I Googled him,” Taylor told South West News Service, according to the Post. “I was surprised that he was using his real phone number. I thought that was kind of stupid but I knew he wasn’t a psycho so I met him.”
“He opened the door and he was very nice. He was a gentleman,” Taylor said, according to Daily Mail. “We chatted just briefly and then I got changed out of what I was wearing into lingerie. Then the adult stuff started to happen.”
The two even managed to find time to discuss legislation.
“It was a one-hour session and it went pretty quickly, then the rest of it was chatting,” Taylor said. “I told him I had Googled him and we talked about what he does. He said he comes up to Salt Lake a lot and he would like to see me again. He said he never does this sort of stuff in St. George because it is really culturally strict down there.”
She added, “He doesn’t drink so we didn’t do anything like that but during that session they were trying to pass medical marijuana so we talked about that.”
Taylor rightly considers Stanard’s strong anti-prostitution stand “hypocritical.”
“It was inevitable that he had to resign,” she reportedly said. “People here will be grossed out and appalled by this. They thought they knew him. I was surprised when I found out that he voted in favor of stricter laws.”
