Democrats just won’t let their tired narrative die.
On Saturday, the House Intelligence Committee’s ranking Democrat, Adam Schiff (D-CA), took aim at President Trump for describing himself as “vindicated” following the Friday release of the highly-anticipated memo alleging abuse by the FBI in spying on the Trump campaign.
Quite the opposite, Mr. President. The most important fact disclosed in this otherwise shoddy memo was that FBI investigation began July 2016 with your advisor, Papadopoulos, who was secretly discussing stolen Clinton emails with the Russians. https://t.co/2rGOE1jGg2

“Quite the opposite, Mr. President,” Schiff wrote. “The most important fact disclosed in this otherwise shoddy memo was that FBI investigation began July 2016 with your advisor, Papadopoulos, who was secretly discussing stolen Clinton emails with the Russians.”
Earlier on Saturday, the president wrote:

“This memo totally vindicates ‘Trump’ in probe. But the Russian Witch Hunt goes on and on. Their was no Collusion and there was no Obstruction (the word now used because, after one year of looking endlessly and finding NOTHING, collusion is dead). This is an American disgrace!”
According to the memo, “The Papadopoulos information triggered the opening of an FBI counterintelligence investigation in late July 2016 by FBI agent Pete Strzok.”

The news coincided with a New York Times report from last month that said the FBI did not begin its investigation of the Trump campaign due to the largely unsubstantiated dossier, but because of drunken remarks by former Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.
The memo also noted that the dossier was crucial to the FBI’s obtainment of a FISA warrant to perform surveillance on Trump adviser Carter Page.
“Deputy Director McCabe testified before the Committee in December 2017 that no surveillance warrant would have been sought from the FISC [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court] without the Steele dossier information,” the memo read.

Additionally, the memo mentioned a lack of connection between Page and Papadopoulos:
“The Page FISA application also mentions information regarding fellow Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos, but there is no evidence of any cooperation or conspiracy between Page and Papadopoulos.”
Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in October about his relations with Russian officials.
According to the Times article, the former Trump adviser told Australia’s ambassador to Britain, Alexander Downer, that he knew about hacked emails from Hillary Clinton’s private email server that were in Russian possession.

Downer then reportedly relayed this information to Australia’s ambassador to the US, Joe Hockey.
The decision to base an investigation on this lackluster information was made by Peter Strzok, the FBI agent who has faced accusations of bias for exchanging anti-Trump text messages with his mistress, FBI lawyer Lisa Page.
In another of the memo’s findings, the FBI and Department of Justice used the dossier to secure FISA warrants to spy on Carter Page.

The agencies were aware of dossier author Christopher Steele’s anti-Trump bias, and the FBI knew the document was funded by the Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee, but this knowledge was not disclosed to the FISA court.
Schiff was excoriated for his tweet.
“Schiff said memo would endanger natl sec. It did not. He said it contained sources & methods that couldn’t be released. He was lying. He said it was materially altered. It was not. Time & again he repeatedly feeds media & public TPs that are just not true.”
