GOP Rep. says it would be ‘classic Trump’ if he released the memo at tonight’s SOTU address

A GOP Representative at the forefront of the “Release the Memo” drive believes it would be a “classic Trump” move for the president to release the FISA surveillance memo at the heart of a Capitol Hill controversy while at tonight’s State of the Union address.

The Judiciary Committee member, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) , appeared on Fox News ahead of the president’s widely anticipated national address.

“I think nothing would be better, Harris, than if the President of the United States tonight walked down the hallway that is right behind me, stood on the floor of the House of Representatives and handed to our Speaker Paul Ryan his consent to release the memo,” Gaetz said.

“The Intelligence Committee has done their job,” he continued, “the Congress has done its job and now this matter lies with the President of the United States. He’s indicated he will accept the will of the vote of the Intelligence Committee, that is clearly to release the memo. The president has that power and I think it will be classic Trump to do it during the State of the Union tonight to kick things off.”

“The Democrats for their part say they have their own memo. Have you seen it, do you know what’s in it?” Fox News host Harris Faulkner replied.

“I’m on my way to go read their memo, so long as the Democrat memo doesn’t reveal sources and methods, so long as it doesn’t contain inaccuracies, so long as it meets the standards the Republican staff memo has met, I would suggest that we release both of them and have this discussion,” Gaetz replied.

“Here’s the bottom line, no one is going to be able to dispute the facts laid out in the memo prepared by the intelligent staff. These are not opinions or conclusions, these are facts that are well sourced, no one is going to be able to dispute their veracity and then we get to have a good debate in this country about whether we want political parties weaponizing our own intelligence community against them.”

Indeed, two senior FBI officials contacted by Fox News reviewed the FISA memo drafted by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) and found that they “could not point to any factual inaccuracies.”

As for President Trump, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Tuesday that “there are no current plans to release the House Intelligence Committee’s memo. The President has not seen or been briefed on the memo or reviewed its contents.”

A head fake from the White House? Many right-leaning political observers hope so.

No matter what President Trump does at tonight’s SOTU address, the intense desire for the administration to “release the memo” is not going away anytime soon.
