Trey Gowdy is laying it down.
In a “Fox News Sunday” interview, the South Carolina Republican lawmaker gave insight into the contents of the classified four-page memo alleging the FBI and Department of Justice abused the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to spy on the Trump campaign.
Gowdy told Chris Wallace that the mysterious memo, yet to be released to the public, answers a broad range of questions, and hinted at further details regarding former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s relationship with dossier author Christopher Steele.
“If you think your viewers want to know whether or not the dossier was used in court proceedings, whether or not it was vetted before it was used, whether or not it’s ever been vetted — if you are interested in who paid for the dossier, if you are interested in Christopher Steele’s relationship with Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee, then, yes, you will want the memo to come out,” Gowdy said.
The congressman, who heads the House Oversight Committee, expressed concern over the FBI’s reported use of the dossier–which remains largely unverified–to obtain a FISA warrant to spy on Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
“Do you want to know that the Democratic National Committee paid for material that was never vetted, that was included in a court proceeding?”
He also suggested bias by an unnamed primary source in the FISA court proceedings.
“Do you want to know whether or not the primary source in these court proceedings had a bias against one candidate? Do you want to know whether or not he said he’d do anything to keep that candidate from becoming president?”
Gowdy’s remark may have alluded to Steele, a former British spy who prepared the dossier for the opposition research firm Fusion GPS, which was in turn funded by the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign.
The lawmaker declined to confirm to Chris Wallace that the dossier was used to obtain the FISA warrant, saying he was not at liberty to discuss a classified document.
He suggested Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and the memo’s primary author, allow the FBI and Department of Justice to review the document prior to its public release.
“There’s nothing in this memo the Department is not already aware of,” Gowdy asserted.
In light of the Republican’s remarks, many Twitter users called on the House Intelligence Committee to release the memo.
