Elizabeth Warren tomahawks Trump’s immigration deal: It’s ‘insulting’

You can’t always get what you want.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) slammed President Trump’s immigration proposal, deriding it as “anti-immigrant”– even though it would go beyond current “Dreamers” and create a path to citizenship for 1.8 million illegal aliens.

“By ending DACA, @realdonaldtrump subjected 800k Dreamers to deportation,” Warren wrote in response to Thursday’s reports. “Now he wants to hold them hostage to Steven Miller’s anti-immigrant wish list. It’s insulting. We already have a bipartisan solution to the Trump-created crisis: it’s called the Dream Act. #DreamActNow.”

White House senior officials told The Hill that the president is willing to extend amnesty and a path to citizenship for roughly 700,000 “Dreamers,” as well as an additional 1.1 million illegal aliens who meet the requirements for DACA but were not previously covered by it.

In exchange, Congress would place $25 billion in a trust fund that could not be allocated to other purposes by future Congresses.

Chain migration would be cut by limiting visa sponsorship by citizens and permanent residents to only spouses and minor children. The change would apply across the board–not only to the DACA beneficiaries.

The visa lottery, which was used by the perpetrator of November’s NYC driving attack, would also be eliminated under the White House’s plan.

Under President Trump’s proposal, it would take approximately 10-12 years for illegal immigrants granted amnesty to receive citizenship.

Warren was joined in her criticism by senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Brian Schatz (D-HI).

Menendez faces a retrial for corruption charges after his case ended in a mistrial last year.

The Trump proposal was praised by immigration hardliners Tom Cotton (R-AR) and David Perdue (R-GA).

If Warren and Democrats are willing to reject a generous amnesty offer because they balk at funding the wall and ending chain migration, they better prepare to face backlash from their own party’s pro-amnesty wing.
