Democrats are jumping up and down, certain that this time they finally “caught” President Trump.
Several House Democrats excoriated the president after a Thursday New York Times report that claimed President Trump nearly fired Special Counsel Robert Mueller–but stopped short after White House counsel Don McGahn threatened to resign rather than carry out the order.
The Times piece read:
“President Trump ordered the firing last June of Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel overseeing the Russia investigation, according to four people told of the matter, but ultimately backed down after the White House counsel threatened to resign rather than carry out the directive.”
According to the Times, President Trump believed Mueller had conflicts of interest because he had previously worked at a law firm that represented his son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) was among the lawmakers who cited the report as evidence the president obstructed or attempted to obstruct justice.
“As a former Special Assistant Attorney General in Illinois’ anti-corruption unit, there’s a detail I want to point out on the President’s attempted firing of Mueller: you don’t have to succeed to obstruct justice,” Krishnamoorthi wrote. “Just ‘endeavoring’ to do it is a crime.”
Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) also accused President Trump of obstruction.
Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) insinuated the president is trying to “hide” criminal behavior.

The report came a day after President Trump said he was “looking forward” to testifying under oath to Mueller.
On Friday, President Trump responded to the Times report by calling it “fake news” and a “typical New York Times fake story.”

The Mueller probe has been the subject of criticism, with observers accusing it of anti-Trump bias.
Two former members of the special counsel’s team, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, were found to have exchanged a series of text messages in which they made derogatory comments about the president, including speaking about an oppositional “secret society.”
Various members of the Mueller probe previously gave large donations to Hillary Clinton and other Democratic politicians.
President Trump himself has called the investigation into alleged obstruction of justice and Russian collusion by his campaign a “witch hunt.”
