While many critics of President Trump were up in arms over his alleged description of some African nations as “sh*thole countries,” Uganda’s president had nothing but praise.
President Yoweri Museveni wasn’t even sure Trump had uttered the phrase but said he is a fan of the U.S. president for speaking “frankly” about Africa, according to the Associated Press.
“I love Trump because he tells Africans frankly,” Museveni said Tuesday, addressing members of the regional East African Legislative Assembly.
“I don’t know whether he was misquoted or whatever. But he talks to Africans frankly,” Museveni said, “In the world, you cannot survive if you are weak.”
The remarks from the Ugandan leader followed an earlier apology from the U.S. ambassador for Trump’s alleged comment which was leaked after a private meeting in the Oval Office discussing immigration reforms. The president’s words were described as “obviously quite disturbing and upsetting” by U.S. Ambassador Deborah Malac in a meeting with Uganda’s speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, the AP reported.
A group of African ambassadors to the United Nations condemned the remark by Trump as “outrageous, racist and xenophobic” and demanded an apology.
Musevani, however, is still solidly in Trump’s corner, referring to him as an honest man during his State of the Nation address on Jan 1. The 73-year-old politician has been the president of Uganda since 1986.
