Shock poll shows Americans support Trump on immigration, want drastic cuts to numbers entering US

For Democrats, the party of identity politics, when it rains it pours.

The government shutdown over the weekend was the direct result of Democrats advocating for foreign nationals in the U.S. illegally, aka DREAMers, but a shock poll shows Americans are more in tune with President Trump’s tough stance on immigration.

A new Harvard-Harris poll found Americans support granting citizenship rights to the so-called DREAMers — 77 percent — but also back the border wall, limits to chain migration and an end to the Diversity Visa Lottery, The Washington Times reported.

The latter three factors being the base of Trump’s proposed immigration policies.

But even more striking is the support for LOWER overall legal immigration.

Amid the current rate of 1.3 million legal immigrants being admitted each and every year, the public overwhelmingly wants a drastic reduction in the numbers.

More from The Times:

The survey asked respondents what level of overall legal immigration they would like to see.

A stunning 35 percent said the level should be fewer than 250,000 a year, while another 19 percent said it should be 250,000 to 500,000. Combined, they make up a majority looking for a cut of at least 50 percent over current annual levels. Another 18 percent said they want to see 500,000 to 1 million.

Just 19 percent of respondents said they want an increase over 1 million.

As the newspaper noted, the position “has little traction” among the pandering politicians on Capital Hill.

According to the poll, respondents agree by a 79 percent to 21 percent margin that skills and ability to assimilate should take precedence over extended family ties.

Trump bestows a savage new nickname on CNN’s Jim Acosta after Dems cave on shutdown

More than 60 percent said border security is inadequate, with 54 percent saying they support “building a combination of physical and electronic barriers across the U.S.-Mexico border.”

Perhaps, we now know why Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer caved and re-opened the federal government without getting much in return.
