Trump lashes out at Democrats over failure to cut deal: ‘Far more concerned with illegal immigrants’…

President Donald Trump tore into Democrats over the federal government shutdown, which initiated at midnight on the one-year anniversary of him taking office.

The failure to reach an agreement on the temporary spending measure stemmed largely due to Democrats’ insistence that a solution should be reached on DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

“Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border,” Trump tweeted. “They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. in order to power through mess!”

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader claimed that he offered Trump a deal that would have given the president funding for the wall with Mexico.

“During the meeting, in exchange for strong [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals] protections, I reluctantly put the border wall on the table for the discussion. Even that was not enough to entice the president to finish the deal,” Schumer said on the Senate floor.

At the meeting between Schumer and Trump, a purported preliminary deal had been struck, according to one New York Times source.

As the meal progressed, an outline of an agreement was struck, according to one person familiar with the discussion: Mr. Schumer said yes to higher levels for military spending and discussed the possibility of fully funding the president’s wall on the southern border with Mexico. In exchange, the president agreed to support legalizing young immigrants who were brought to the United States as children.

Mr. Schumer left the White House believing he had persuaded the president to support a short, three to four-day spending extension to finalize an agreement, which would also include disaster funding and health care measures.

Later, the president is reported to have told Schumer that the immigration measures weren’t stringent enough.

A short time later, Mr. Schumer called the president, the person said, but the conversation drove the pair even further apart. The immigration concessions from Democrats were not conservative enough, Mr. Trump told Mr. Schumer. The president said he needed more border security measures as well as more enforcement of illegal immigration in parts of the country far from the border.

A CNN poll said that more Americans thought “avoiding a shutdown is more important than passing a bill to maintain the (DACA) program.”

DACA was an executive action that took place under Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama in absence of a legislative agreement that could have been reached when the Democratic Party controlled both the Congress and the presidency.
