With the failure of the Senate to reach an agreement to avoid a government shutdown, Democrats are naturally trying to convince America to ignore their “hostage-taking” insistence on a DACA deal and blame the entire thing on Republicans and President Trump.
But to lay this disaster at the feet of Trump for nothing other than allegedly calling places like Haiti, El Salvador, and some African nations “sh*thole countries” during a private meeting, well that’s a whole other level of ridiculous.
And leave it to a prominent #NeverTrump “conservative” like Charlie Sykes to go on CNN and make that argument with a straight face.
“Republicans have quite a campaign with a hashtag #Schumershutdown,” Sykes said in response to host Chris Matthews’ question about who is to blame for the shutdown, “and of course, it is the Democrats who are pulling the trigger on all of this, but look, we’re living in the era of Donald Trump. Donald Trump is the star of every play, the bride in every wedding. He sets the mood music for everything that’s happened over the last year. You think about the symbolism of shutting down the government on the one-year anniversary. How that encapsulates so much about all of this.”
“You know, what a bad negotiator he is, you know, the fact that he basically blew up any sort of a deal, you know, with his sh*thole countries meeting,” Sykes said. “All of that would be a disaster. So I understand the argument that you blame Chuck Schumer, but I don’t know how Donald Trump does not become front and center in all of this. And how that talking point that the Republicans control everything. And they haven’t managed to get a spending bill through time and time again.”
Instead of laughing out loud at Sykes, the panel moved on. Matthews commented on how Trump is acting “like a deer in the headlights.”
“We don’t know his position on the issue holding this thing up, DACA. I thought he was for DACA last Tuesday. By Thursday, he wasn’t for it. He’s all over the place, he won’t say. That’s a problem for a leader not to say what you think about the key issue holding everything up and making the government closed as of midnight,” said Matthews.
“It’s not all procedure,” Matthews said. “It’s not all whatever, mechanics. People know the Democratic Party is basically lined up with the cause of the DREAMers, people who came here as young kids because their parents brought them here, and the Republicans on the hardest right side of the Republican Party, people like — what’s his name, Tom Cotton and his buddy Perdue from Georgia, they say no way at all. They’re not going to do anything that helps anybody Hispanic who came here without papers to stay here. They want to be against anything that even looks like amnesty toward anybody.”
The next commentator tried to one-up Sykes on the insanity by claiming that Dems “are trying to negotiate in good faith” by referring to the “Durbin and Graham bill” that would have essentially given up the farm on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program without any meaningful gains on border security and the wall.
