MSNBC’s Chris Matthews seems to have confirmed that Democrats do indeed live in an alternate reality.
Many spent the first few months after the 2016 election declaring that Donald Trump was not their president and demanding their queen Hillary Clinton take the throne. But on Thursday’s edition of “Hardball,” Matthews revealed that for some people, former President Obama is “still the president.”
That would be funny if it wasn’t so disturbing.
The former president, who has not spoken personally to Trump since the two parted ways at the White House one year ago, plans to hit the 2018 campaign trail for Democrats. Matthews asked his panel about Obama, referring to him as the president and, correcting himself, declared some people still see him as such.
“Let me ask you about the president — President Obama, to some people still the president,” Matthews said. “I was watching the David Letterman — that interview, and a lot of people [were saying,] ‘Oh, he’s still the president.’”
Matthews then completed his question, wondering how Obama will manage the campaigning without a confrontation with Trump.
“How does he get into this fight without getting his face dirtied by Trump, who loves to turn opponents into dirt?” He asked.
The former president will begin making appearances on behalf of Democratic candidates in the fall, and while he has requests from the DNC, the NDRC, Organizing for Action, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, he has made no commitments, according to Politico.
To the dismay of his supporters, he has remained largely on the political sidelines since leaving office, taking a shot at Trump a few months back while never speaking his name directly.
For one Democratic senator, it is Trump who is on the sidelines and thinking that Obama is still the president.

Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey called on Trump to “be a leader” in the face of a possible government shutdown.
“The president is sitting on the sidelines pretending that Barack Obama is president somehow, and criticizing the process by which we create legislation in Congress to pass a budget that funds our country,” Markey said Thursday.
