Rep. Trey Gowdy poured it on former White House Chief Strategist Stephen Bannon on Wednesday, saying he has a “credibility issue.”
Bannon, who was fired in August and stepped down from Breitbart News earlier this month after his key financial backer abandoned him, testified on Tuesday before the House Intelligence Committee.
In an appearance Wednesday on Fox News, Gowdy told host Martha MacCallum that if Special Counsel Robert Mueller plans to hinge his case around Bannon’s testimony, he will have his work cut out for him.
“I think the only thing dangerous for President [Donald] Trump or his campaign is credible evidence,” the South Carolina Republican said.
“This is the same witness that said there was a zero percent chance that the Russian lawyer wasn’t walked up to Trump,” Gowdy then said of Bannon. “And when he was asked what that evidence was, he came up with nothing.”
“This is the same witness that said that members of the president’s family committed acts of treason,” he added. “So he’s got a credibility issue. If they’re hinging the entire case on Steve Bannon‘s credibility, good luck to the prosecution.”
Bannon was immediately served subpoenas during his closed-door testimony after he refused to answer some questions. His attorney reportedly said Bannon was directed by the White House not to answer questions about his time in the administration.

Gowdy, a former prosecutor, said Bannon tried to dodge questions by exercising a privilege that doesn’t exist.
“That was his slip-up,” he insisted. “He got this notion that ‘hey, I’m going to create a privilege that no one’s ever heard of before that doesn’t exist in the law.”
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., wasted little time attacking the Trump White House over what he termed a “gag order,” The Hill reported.
“The scope of this assertion of privilege — if that’s what it is — is breathtaking,” Schiff said. “It goes well beyond anything we’ve seen in this investigation.”
“This was effectively a gag order by the White House.”
