A misunderstanding over a cellphone believed to be missing turned into a massive fight involving at least 20 people at a Newark, California pizza restaurant on Saturday.

The fight began when the family of a girl who lost the phone asked another family at John’s Incredible Pizza Company if they had seen it, San Francisco Gate reports.
The verbal exchange quickly deteriorated into physical blows. Customers at the establishment threw punches at each other as staff attempted to separate the groups. At one point, pepper spray was deployed by someone in the crowd.
Onlooker Nicole Davis described the incident:
“It was a horrible experience,” Davis said. “I made sure I protected my kids until they cleared the way so we can get out, but I just hated the fact they did this at a family establishment. It makes me sick that my kids had to see that and all the kids that were scared crying.”
Restaurant worker Drake Lynn told NBC Bay Area, “Their boyfriends, or males who they were with, backed them up, and then they started throwing punches, and then their friends started throwing punches, and they started throwing punches at other parties that were there.”
The violence presented a major risk for the pizza shop’s employees.
“One staff member jumped in by himself to stop the fight and ended up getting hurt,” David recalled. “He had no backup. That just wasn’t a safe move. It’s not their fault. This is not their job title. They don’t train them for things like this.”
Officers from the Newark and Fremont police departments were called into NewPark Mall to break up the crowd. Authorities said only minor injuries were sustained and no arrests were made.
The Find My iPhone app led the phone’s owner to John’s Incredible Pizza Company, but the phone was a floor above the restaurant in the lost and found. A manager later found the phone while police were on the scene.
“We would have definitely found the cellphone, if they would have just given us a little bit of time and let us do our jobs instead of throwing punches,” Lynn said.
Some people are immune to rational thinking.
