In first remarks on controversy, President Trump essentially denies using ‘sh*thole’ language in DACA meeting

President Trump responded to the “sh*thole” controversy that has been lighting up television screens and being repeated on the airwaves. Sort of.

The president’s remark, first reported by the Washington Post’s Josh Dawsey, is quoted as follows:

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

After a media firestorm that saw CNN and MSNBC give grandstanding lectures about the faux pas language, the president essentially denied using such “language.” Judge for yourself:

“The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used,” President Trump tweeted. “What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made – a big setback for DACA!”

This is a roundabout denial, as many would interpret it.

The meeting on DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, has been the centerpiece of broader immigration reform the president intends to carry out, including strengthening border security, ending chain migration, as well as the visa lottery system.

Instead, the president is dangling DACA before Democrat lawmakers, even as it was struck down recently by a San Francisco judge, in a case that quite well could be overturned on appeal. Trump continued to speak out on the DACA meeting on Friday morning.

Trump is canceling his trip to London, his reason is just plain sad

“Sadly, Democrats want to stop paying our troops and government workers in order to give a sweetheart deal, not a fair deal, for DACA. Take care of our Military, and our Country, FIRST!” the president also tweeted.

He also gave his views of the potential deal in a Twitter thread:

It is uncertain where the DACA deal goes from here. But one thing is for certain, the controversy over the president’s reported remarks won’t be going away anytime soon.
