E! responds to Catt Sadler after she claims gender wage disparity, let’s just say feminists aren’t happy

An executive at E! has come out defending the network against claims made by a longtime E! News anchor about a gender pay disparity.

E! chief Frances Berwick set the “record straight” on Tuesday about the “massive disparity in pay” claim last month by Catt Sadler, who left her job with E! News after 12 years, after learning her co-host Jason Kennedy made more money.

“There is a lot of misinformation out there,” Berwick said at the Television Critics Association Winter press tour in Pasadena, California. “Catt Sadler and Jason Kennedy had different roles and therefore different salaries. Catt was focused on daytime. Jason Kennedy is on primetime evening news, plus red carpet. Our employee’s salaries are based on their roles and their expertise regardless of gender. We wish Catt well, but I hope that sets the record straight on that.”

Actresses Debra Messing, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Eva Longoria pointed a finger at the network on the red carpet ahead of the Golden Globe Awards.

“I was so shocked to hear that E! doesn’t believe in paying their female cohost the same as their male cohost,” Messing said Sunday. “I miss Catt Sadler. So we stand with her. And that’s something that can change tomorrow. We want people to start having this conversation that women are just as valuable as men.”

The comments came in via Twitter as well as Julianne Moore, Brie Larson, and Amy Schumer chimed in.

“If you’re on the carpet tonight or at home post in support and ask E! what happened?” Schumer posted. “We thought you would be for pay equality and say #ImWithCattSad.”

Sadler opined her reasons for leaving E! in a blog post last month.

“How can I accept an offer that shows they do not value my contributions and paralleled dedication all these years? How can I not echo the actions of my heroes and stand for what is right no matter what the cost? How can I remain silent when my rights under the law have been violated?” she wrote.
