Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol has gone from petty to absurd in his distaste for President Trump.
If Trump and the GOP give away their best piece of leverage in decades, a deal on DACA Democrats are seemingly desperate to make, without getting in exchange anything of significance that would permanently curb unfettered immigration to this country, the result will be catastrophic not only for Republicans, but for America as a sovereign nation.
Notwithstanding the Democratic Party’s desire for “future electoral success” by codifying DACA, the lack of a real border wall and a continuance of so-called ‘chain migration’ will continue to reshape the country into the liberal mold, aided by the importation of populations used to restrictions on freedom and being dependent on Big Government.
Kristol thinks the whole immigration thing is “amusing.”
During a Tuesday appearance on MSNBC’s “MTP Daily,” the so-called ‘conservative’ described the laugh-fest he and his ilk would have if Trump’s base gets “betrayed” on immigration.
“What I’m seeing from immigration hardliners on Twitter is the line that, ‘the president who we elected to give us a wall and no amnesty, is going to give us amnesty and no wall,’” said Washington Post writer Eugene Robinson. “So that’s sort of the attack on…”
“If you put your faith in demagogues, you’re going to be disappointed,” said the notoriously anti-Trump Kristol, adding, “He didn’t believe any of it. Trade is the one issue, if you think about it, for 20, 30 years he’s believed on. He’s been a protectionist…”
Kristol echoed the tiresome #NeverTrump mantra that Trump was never really a conservative in any way, a theme that still manages to get play despite the fact that by nearly any account the president has governed as a conservative more in the mold of Ronald Reagan than Gerald Ford or George Bush.
“Immigration thing, total demagoguery, and now it would be amusing if the people who put their faith in him get betrayed,” said Kristol.
Laugh it up, Kristol. Thankfully for the rest of us, President Trump is standing firm, but if a “betrayal” happens, Republicans will never win another national election. But then again, maybe that’s what he has wanted all along.
