New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is taking the federal government to court claiming the GOP tax reform bill is a form of “economic civil war.”
The Democratic governor railed against President Trump and Congressional Republicans in his annual State of the State address on Wednesday, vowing to fight the administration on issues from immigration, abortion, the environment and health care as well as the recently approved tax plan, Politico reported.
“They’re now robbing the blue states to pay for the red states … it is an economic civil war, and make no mistake, they are aiming to hurt us,” Cuomo said.
“We believe it is illegal, and we will challenge it in court as unconstitutional,” he added, calling the law “the first federal double taxation in history, violative of states’ rights and the principle of equal protection.”
The governor argued that “Washington’s tax plan now uses New York and California as piggy banks to finance tax cuts for Republican states.” He announced he would be starting a campaign to repeal and replace the law, sounding the alarm that it would be harder to attract new businesses to New York and that people may even end up leaving the state.
Way before the new GOP tax reform plan, however, New York was already bad for business as it was ranked 49th out of 50 in the State Business Tax Climate Index from the Tax Foundation. And despite the majority of Americans receiving a tax cut with the new plan, Democrats seem to continuously play the sore loser, taking to the court system to challenge anything they don’t like.
Twitter users were quick to mock Cuomo and his apparent refusal to lay the blame for New York’s problems on any liberal policies.
The GOP tax plan robs blue states to pay red states.
It is crass, it is ugly, it is divisive, it is an economic civil war.

Don’t tax your citizens so damn much.

Maybe blue states should cut taxes and spending then? Not rocket science.

You raised your state taxes knowing the rich could deduct that from their federal taxes keeping your riches in your state. You can simply lower your state taxes to offset this. https://t.co/o5hHUloTQ1

Alternate: “The tax plan stops forcing red states to sponsor the fiscal irresponsibility of blue states”
Also, your understanding of the Constitution seems to be as bad as that of your brother. https://t.co/t3YYXtmWS2
