In most official appearances as adviser to her father, President Donald Trump, first daughter Ivanka has worn dresses, shoes, jewelry and bags from her namesake label.
That’s according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of images posted on Ivanka Trump’s official social media accounts from when she was first appointed to her role in March through November. The findings show Trump wearing her own brand in 68 percent of official appearances.
Can you imagine a similar media scrutiny of Barack Obama’s children? Or of Chelsea Clinton’s business dealings?
It’s enough to prompt conflict of interest concerns, with Trump being described as a “walking billboard for her brand” in the report.
Guian McKee, associate professor of presidential studies at the University of Virginia, said that the president’s daughter “is testing the boundaries on federal rules that bar government employees from using their position to promote brands that personally enrich them,” according to The Journal.

Trump told The Journal that if she were motivated by profit, she would have stayed in the private sector.
“If what motivated me was to grow my businesses and make money,” she insisted, “I would have stayed in New York and done just that.”
Trump stepped away from her role at the helm of IT Collection LLC in March.
The company is now in a trust being run by her brother-in-law, Josh Kushner, and sister-in-law Nicole Meyer and is valued at over $50 million. It generated between $1 million and $5 million in income for Trump between March and May, Newsweek reported.
New York Times chief fashion critic Vanessa Friedman spoke about the conundrum Trump faces in an interview with The New York Times.
“On the one hand, there’s something ridiculous about suggesting that Ms. Trump not wear whatever clothes are in her closet, and as the founder of a fashion brand that bears her name, presumably part of her job has been to promote said brand by wearing it — to, in effect, demonstrate her belief in her own products,” Friedman said in response to the Journal’s report.
What are your thoughts? Should Ivanka clear her closet of all items bearing her brand or is this much ado about nothing?
