Attorney General Jeff Sessions is ordering an immediate review into the Obama administration’s decision to give terrorist organization Hezbollah a ‘free pass’ in order to prevent any interference in his legacy Iran nuclear deal.
The Obama administration overlooked drug-trafficking and money laundering operations in order to “keep the Iran nuclear deal on track,” according to a Fox News report. The original report breaking the story wide open came from Politico.
The Department of Justice initiative launched under the Obama administration, named Project Cassandra, will come under investigation by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
“While I am hopeful that there were no barriers constructed by the last administration to allowing DEA agents to fully bring all appropriate cases under Project Cassandra, this is a significant issue for the protection of Americans,” Sessions said in a written statement. “We will review these matters and give full support to investigations of violent drug trafficking organizations.”
Hezbollah is a lethal terrorist group with known ties to the Iranian regime. It is heavily involved in money laundering and international drug running. According to the Politico report, U.S. federal investigators in the Drug Enforcement Administration amassed information on the terror network’s operation, which accounted for approximately $1 billion in illicit drug and weapons sales.
The Obama administration reportedly tamped down the U.S. law enforcement effort to track and report on Hezbollah’s activities as the Iranian deal approached its culmination.
“The closer we got to the [Iran deal], the more these activities went away,” David Asher, a DOD analyst who helped establish Project Cassandra, told Politico. “So much of the capability, whether it was special operations, whether it was law enforcement, whether it was [Treasury dept.] designations — even the capacity, the personnel assigned to this mission — it was assiduously drained, almost to the last drop, by the end of the Obama administration.”
