WaPo report Trump thought about pulling Gorsuch from SCOTUS nom sheds new light on president

A report by The Washington Post about President Donald Trump allegedly thinking about rescinding Neil Gorsuch’s Supreme Court nomination sheds new light on the president.

…but not in the way the newspaper might expect.

In an article featuring the always reliable “people with knowledge of the discussions,” The Post reported Tuesday that Trump “angrily” vented to advisers after Gorsuch was critical of the president’s criticism of the federal judiciary in private meetings with legislators.

Trump’s criticism came after a judge intervened to stop his lawful travel ban targeting several majority-Muslim countries.

As might be expected, Trump blasted The Washington Post report as “FAKE NEWS” on Twitter.

“A story in the @washingtonpost that I was close to “rescinding” the nomination of Justice Gorsuch prior to confirmation is FAKE NEWS. I never even wavered and am very proud of him and the job he is doing as a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The unnamed sources don’t exist!” the president tweeted.

But The Post is sticking to its guns, claiming the account “is based on interviews with 11 people familiar with the episode.”

The president was allegedly “worried” Gorsuch would not be “loyal” after he described Trump’s comments on the federal judiciary as “disheartening” and “demoralizing” in a private meeting with Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.

Consequently, Trump was “tempted to pull Gorsuch’s nomination,” saying plenty of other judges would want the job.

“He’s probably going to end up being a liberal like the rest of them,” he allegedly told House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. “You never know with these guys.”

While it’s an unwritten rule that presidents tend to pick Supreme Court nominees for ideological reasons, if not political ones, the account by The Post, if true, sheds a more favorable light on Trump as commander in chief than might have been intended.

That being that he DID NOT use Gorsuch’s apparent lack of loyalty to him against the jurist, putting the best interests of the country before petty personal politics.
