‘Somebody screwed up’: GOP make colossal error on tax cut bill with big ramifications for Senate

The House of Representatives will have to hold another vote for landmark tax relief legislation that would be the biggest overhaul in 30 years.

The GOP earlier passed a bill through the House that was a compromise draft from key parts of the Senate and House versions. Unfortunately for Republicans, even their ostensible “victory” came with a procedural hitch: It failed due to a technicality.

“I mean, somebody screwed up,” Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) said. “A member of the staff screwed up. It’s not the end of Western civilization.”

The GOP seemed to have passed the bill 227-203 on Tuesday and it was ready to hit the Senate the same day. The procedural mishap means that the Senate GOP will have to amass 60 votes to push through two provisions popular with conservatives. As The Hill reported:

One, according to the aide, is tied to 529 accounts for homeschooling expenses, pushed by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

The second concerns an exemption included in the tax bill that would allow universities with fewer than 500 tuition-paying students from having to pay the endowment excise tax.

“The Senate will still vote tonight, and the House will vote tomorrow to send the final bill to the President’s desk,” the Ways and Means spokesperson said. “Chairman Brady (R-TX) will work to restore these provisions in a future tax bill.”
