With a shut down looming on Friday at the midnight hour, President Donald Trump’s spokesperson was asked how the White House plans to handle Democrat lawmakers unwilling to support a year-end spending bill because of the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders appeared Tuesday on “Fox & Friends,” where cohost Steve Doocy noted a shut down may happen over Democrats insisting on language to resolve DACA. The president ended the program in September, giving Congress six months to come up with a solution.
Nearly 800,000 illegal immigrants, who Democrats fondly call DREAMers, could be subject to deportation without congressional action.
Sander’s said she hoped the opposition party doesn’t “hold our country hostage” over the issue.
“We’re going to continue working with Democrats and Republicans,” she said. “Our goal is to make sure we get this done without shutting the government down. “We are still optimistic that could happen and we hope that Democrats won’t hold our country hostage over some of their specific proposals.”
Imagine Democrats doing what they were elected to do, representing the interests of American citizens instead of advocating on behalf of foreign nationals in the country illegally.
“We like to call it the Schumer rule,” Sanders added. “It’s something he talked about extensively since he was debating this the last time around.”
To the dismay of many on the right, she let slip that Republicans are planning to work with Democrats in January.
“Hopefully he’ll adhere to some of his own advice, not hold our budget — and certainly not hold our military and defense spending — hostage over some pieces of legislation that we hope to work with them on at the 1st of the year.”
