What is one of the most disgraceful, dangerous things that can occur in America’s system of government?
My nomination is the overzealous prosecutor who makes prosecutorial decisions based on furthering his/her own career, pursuing his political ideologies, or whose team harbors a personal bias against individuals who are the target of his prosecution or investigation.
Currently, Exhibit No. 1 that reveals this danger to our American representative democracy is the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, of ties and so-called “collusion” between Russia and then-candidate Donald Trump against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
Where to start? How about with the mounting evidence that Mueller’s investigative team consists largely of defenders of the “Deep State”, the body of influential members of government agencies who are involved in the quiet manipulation or control of national federal policy. Many in the Deep State are Obama holdovers, and Clinton supporters and donors. In addition to three dozen staff members, Mueller’s prosecutor team consists largely of 16 Democrat lawyers and a judge, all of whom went to Eastern law schools. They all know each other and many have worked together, says Politico. Several of them have donated big money to Democrats over the years.
The news lately has been chock full of examples of conflicts of interest that may prevent Mueller and his team from conducting an unbiased investigation. Even the FBI is caught up in the public’s concern about bias, with a Harvard/Harris poll revealing nearly 2 out of 3 voters believe “the FBI has been resisting providing information to Congress on the Hillary Clinton and President Donald Trump investigations.” Evidence also is increasing that the FBI watered down its findings of the Hillary Clinton email probe, including changing language to cover up the truth of how Clinton handled classified information, and to eliminate her exposure to criminal charges. Questions also abound about how the FBI was involved with the now-discredited anti-Trump dossier, and about illegal leaks to the press that are damaging to Trump.
In short, more and more conflicts and problems are coming to light weekly in Mueller’s investigation, giving the impression to the public that information emerging so far is all tip-of-the-iceberg stuff. And Mueller’s complicated involvement in the Uranium One deal when he led the FBI, and his ties to former FBI Director Comey have created a “very bothersome” taint.
What’s really happening here is that the public is getting a sneak peek in how the federal government puts together prosecutions, and how they threaten smaller defendants with long prison terms and bankruptcy unless they become “cooperating” witnesses. This gives such smaller players strong incentives to lie in order to protect themselves and their life savings; they won’t escape the federal noose unless they provide damning testimony. A prosecutor’s ability to flip “defendants into collaborators” has been a specialty of Mueller’s “pit bull” investigator Andrew Weissmann, who is under fire for bias against Trump. Among other things, Weissmann reportedly attended Clinton’s election night party. This is the same guy who emailed Sally Yates, the former acting Attorney General, about how much he was “in awe” of her and how very “proud” he was of her decision to refuse to defend the President’s initial travel ban.
Yet another investigator on Mueller’s team was Democrat Peter Strzok, who “sent anti-Trump text messages during the 2016 election”, calling Trump an “idiot” whom he wanted Clinton to defeat. And let’s not forget about Lisa Page, the senior FBI attorney on Mueller’s team at the time, who called Trump a “loathsome human” and who connived with Strzok about her concern that their talks about supporting Hillary “can’t be traced.” This drip-drip-drip of new revelations of anti-Trump bias on Mueller’s team puts a stench all over his efforts.
This entire biased farce is a showpiece for how a Deep State “big government can end up becoming a threat to representative democracy,” said political commentator Laura Ingraham.
Mueller should temporarily halt his investigation and have an independent expert examine all the conflicts of interest afflicting the individuals who are conducting the probe. If he fails to do that, another piece of America’s rule of law is lost.
