Jail guards at Rikers Island are furious over Colin Kaepernick’s visit, saying the anti-police quarterback might foment more inmate violence against them.
“This will only encourage inmates to continue to attack correction officers at a time when we need more protection,” Elias Husamudeen, president of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association, warned in a press statement.
The City of New York allowed Kaepernick to make a surprise visit to Rikers Island on Tuesday to meet with inmates. During his visit, the unemployed quarterback discussed the need for criminal justice reform and explained that he launched his NFL protests to call attention to police brutality against black men.
Several corrections officers are worried that Kaepernick was tacitly encouraging violent felons to take matters into their own hands.
“He came out of the gate with the police brutality, and he said the NFL was keeping him out of the game for speaking out,” one officer told the New York Post.
Another added: “The inmates see a guy like this coming in, and it’s almost like the administration is condoning being anti-law enforcement. His presence alone could incite these guys.”
There have been numerous instances of inmates assaulting guards at Rikers over the years. “We’ve got enough issues in the facility with inmates assaulting staff,” one corrections officer said. “His presence, what he stands for, certainly doesn’t help.”
Colin Kaepernick’s anti-police views are well-known. In addition to wearing socks at an NFL game that depicted cops as pigs, Kaepernick donated $25,000 to a group that honors convicted cop killer and domestic terrorist Assata Shakur.
In 2016, Kaepernick hijacked NFL games when he refused to stand for the national anthem. He claimed he was protesting police brutality against black men. But Kaepernick did nothing when blacks were killed by cops (both black and white) during Barack Obama‘s 8-year presidency.
Moreover, Kaepernick does not even bother to vote, and says nothing about the countless black-on-black murders that occur every day across the United States.
Every weekend, there are numerous shootings/murders in Chicago, the hometown of Obama — the nation’s first African-American president. Almost all are black-on-black crimes.
Tellingly, Kaepernick and Black Lives Matter do not protest these senseless murders. Do black lives not matter when other blacks take them?
