Ah, for the good old days and a young Suzanne Somers!
The former co-star of “Three’s Company” sat down with Fox News to talk about how it was a different time when the show debuted in March 1977, though not always better.
For those who weren’t around at the time or were living under a rock, the show was a comedy “that pushed the envelope by matching two attractive young women and one handsome, but clumsy, willing and able young male chef living under one roof,” as a Three’s Company website states.
The late John Ritter played the closeted heterosexual chef, while Somers and actress Joyce Dewitt aptly played the young attractive women.
Somers talked about what is was like to be fired from the show when she asked to be paid on a similar scale as Ritter.
“At year six, what I was really trying to do was not much feminism, but I think we all should be paid commensurate with the amount of tickets that we sell,” she explained. “And I was selling more tickets than any other woman on television. So why were all the men who weren’t selling as many tickets as me being paid 10 and 15 times more?”
“I’m out there playing the dumbest woman in America on television, so it didn’t sync up that I’m the one out there going, ‘Hey, excuse me. Could we talk about parity here and fairness and all that?’” Somers added.
Somers also talked about the last time she spoke with Ritter, who died in 2003 during surgery to repair an aortic dissection.
After being fired from the show, Somers said she never heard from any of her co-stars, but she explained in a new memoir, titled “Two’s Company,” that she received a phone call from Ritter about a month before he died while she getting her hair done.
“I go to the phone. I said, ‘John?’” Somers told Fox News. “He said, ‘Hey babe,’ and I knew his voice right away. And then he said, ‘I forgive you.’”
“I had a moment of, ‘Uh, you forgive me?’ And then I thought, ‘Be the grownup.’ And so I said, ‘Thanks.’
She said they briefly discussed working together again and parted with an agreement that they’d both look for an appropriate project. He died a month later.
