Former Fox News ratings king Bill O’Reilly took to social media in the wake of the not guilty verdict by a San Francisco jury against Jose Garcia Zarate, an illegal immigrant who shot and killed Kate Steinle in 2015.
O’Reilly excoriated the verdict, comparing it to the 1995 OJ Simpson trial outcome.
“Kate Steinle’s killer found not guilty of murder. Not since OJ Simpson has this kind of verdict been dropped. At the very least manslaughter – he had a stolen gun! Awful,” he tweeted.

Instrumental in first bringing the case to the nation’s attention, O’Reilly championed “Kate’s Law,” which would mandate federal prison time for any convicted illegal alien who returns to the U.S. after being deported — Zarate had been deported FIVE times.
After offering his prayers to the Steinle family, O’Reilly called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to charge “the thug” responsible for her death, insisting this is a “litmus test” for Sessions.

Prayers for the Steinle family. Feds should immediately charge the thug with a variety of immigration crimes. What’s happening to America?

It is now on Attorney General Sessions to charge Kate Steinle’s killer with serious immigration violations. This is a litmus test for Mr. Sessions.

In an op-ed published by The Hill, O’Reilly called the verdict “a blot on the legacy of America” and made it clear that Sessions must take action.
At this point, the only justice possible in this terrible situation is to resurrect Kate’s Law, and prosecute Jose Zarate on felonious violations of immigration law,” he wrote. “I expect Attorney General Sessions will do the latter.”
In promoting the piece on social media, O’Reilly put the onus squarely on politicians: “Two and a half years ago, I began covering the Steinle murder case and quickly came to the conclusion that politics had killed Kate along with the bullet.”

O’Reilly also ripped Congress for not passing Kate’s Law, calling out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., for not allowing a stand alone vote. O’Reilly has little confidence that anything will change there.
“As for Congress passing a law that harshly punishes foreign felons who defy deportation, I just don’t know,” he concluded.
This is not the first time O’Reilly has blasted Republicans for not allowing a straight up vote on Kate’s Law.
“There comes a point where the American people are going to have to take back their government,” O’Reilly said on his show back in October 2015. “When a 32-year-old woman can be gunned down by an illegal felon who had been deported five times, and you can’t get a strict law punishing illegal alien felons passed. When that happens, you don’t have a functioning government.”
We may very well have just reached that point.
