National security adviser H.R. McMaster said the odds of a war with North Korea increases every day, so the U.S. must contain the problem soon.
“I think it’s increasing every day,” McMaster told Fox News’ Bret Baier at the Reagan National Security Forum in California. “We’re in a race to solve this problem. He’s getting closer and closer, and there’s not much time left.”
Last week, North Korea escalated tensions by firing another long-range intercontinental ballistic missile. This time, the ICBM flew 1,000 miles higher than a previous launch in July 2017.
McMaster said the United States and its allies must work together to contain North Korea before dictator Kim Jong Un is able to make a weapon that can reach the continental U.S.

“Every time he conducts a missile launch, a nuclear test, he gets better,” McMaster said. “And whether it’s a success or failure isn’t as important as understanding that over the years, he’s been learning from failures, improving, thereby increasing his threat to all of us.”
Kim Jong Un got emboldened during Barack Obama’s tenure because Obama basically ignored the rogue dictator rather than confront him. As a result, Kim got used to American complacency and may think President Trump will react with the same nonchalance toward his saber-rattling.
However, Trump sent a clear message that he will not stand idly by while Kim threatens the United States or her allies. In November, President Trump threw down the gauntlet, warning Kim: Do not try us.
“Do not underestimate us, and do not try us,” Trump said before the South Korean national assembly. “Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face.”
Trump said the U.S. will draw on its unmatched military might to crush any foe. “We will not be intimidated,” he said.
President Trump said Kim Jong Un is sadly mistaken if he thinks American passivity during the Obama era is a sign of weak resolve.
Anti-Trump text messages among Robert Mueller’s team show why Trump can’t get fair shake
“The regime has interpreted America’s past restraint as weakness. This would be a fatal miscalculation,” Trump said. “This is a very different administration than the United States has had in the past.”
