California’s justice system has failed. Now ICE is taking over the job.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement acting director Thomas Homan issued a brief-but-powerful statement in response to Thursday’s court ruling acquitting illegal alien Jose Ines Garcia Zarate of the murder of 32-year-old Kate Steinle.

Homan vowed to deport Garcia Zarate, who has been deported five times before.
“Following the conclusion of this case, ICE will work to take custody of Mr. Garcia Zarate and ultimately remove him from the country,” Homan said.
Homan sharply rebuked San Francisco law enforcement for refusing to cooperate with ICE in helping deport Garcia Zarate earlier–a move that would have saved Steinle’s life.
“San Francisco’s policy of refusing to honor ICE detainers is a blatant threat to public safety and undermines the rule of law. This tragedy could have been prevented if San Francisco had simply turned the alien over to ICE, as we requested, instead of releasing him back onto the streets. It is unconscionable that politicians across this country continue to endanger the lives of Americans with sanctuary policies while ignoring the harm inflicted on their constituents.”
San Francisco remains a sanctuary city, which means local police will still not work with ICE to ensure Garcia Zarate’s is removed from the US.

Thus, immigration officials will have to use resources to discover the date and time of his release. If they’re unable to obtain that information, ICE will then have to begin tracking Garcia Zarate down before he moves to another part of the country to avoid deportation.
Kate Steinle was shot and killed while walking on a pier with her father in 2015. In an interview with ABC 7, Garcia Zarate admitted to murdering her.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions released a statement condemning San Francisco for shielding criminal aliens from deportation.
“When jurisdictions choose to return criminal aliens to the streets rather than turning them over to federal immigration authorities, they put the public’s safety at risk. San Francisco’s decision to protect criminal aliens led to the preventable and heartbreaking death of Kate Steinle.
“While the State of California sought a murder charge for the man who caused Ms. Steinle’s death—a man who would not have been on the streets of San Francisco if the city simply honored an ICE detainer—the people ultimately convicted him of felon in possession of a firearm.
“The Department of Justice will continue to ensure that all jurisdictions place the safety and security of their communities above the convenience of criminal aliens.
“I urge the leaders of the nation’s communities to reflect on the outcome of this case and consider carefully the harm they are doing to their citizens by refusing to cooperate with federal law enforcement officers.”
The not-guilty verdict has ignited a storm of outrage from across the country.
