Pink Floyd frontman’s Germany concert is cancelled over his anti-Semitic campaign against Israel

Roger Waters’ ongoing crusade against the Jewish State of Israel has caused German public broadcasters to cancel plans to air his future concerts.

Five state television and radio affiliates of the national broadcaster ARD have dropped plans to air concerts next summer by the former frontman for the legendary rock band Pink Floyd, citing “accusations of anti-Semitism against him,” according to a Reuters report.

The 74-year-old British singer, who was part of the critically acclaimed band from 1965 to 1985 before launching his solo career, is a member of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement.

Started in 2005, the BDS is a movement to press Israel over its occupation of territories that are sought by Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the BDS campaign an attempt to erase Israel’s legitimacy, according to Reuters.

An online petition launched in Cologne, Germany pressed the regional public broadcaster WDR not to support Waters’ 2018 “Us + Them” concert.

“Will WDR actually support the new ‘Do not buy from Jews’? [a Nazi-era slogan] And use state money to do so?” Jewish resident of Cologne, Malca Goldstein-Wolf wrote accompanying the petition, Breitbart reported.

Berlin and Brandenburg public radio, part of the ARD network, wanted its message to be very clear.

“Taking a clear position here is an important signal for RBB to the Jewish communities in Berlin and Brandenburg,” RBB director Patricia Schlesinger said in a statement to Reuters.

“The quick and decisive reaction by the broadcasters …is an important signal that rampant anti-Semitism against Israel has no place in Germany,” Josef Schuster, president of The Central Council of Jews in Germany, said.

Waters’ tour director thought the decision by the broadcasters was “absolutely ridiculous” though he has himself rejected the BDS and believes concerns by German Jews about  “clearly visible and growing anti-Semitism” in Germany were well-founded.

“I cannot and do not want to deny (Waters) his right to freedom of opinion,” Marek Lieberberg, the son of Holocaust survivors, told the Mannheimer Morgen daily according to Reuters.

Waters, who joined the movement in 2011, came under fire after releasing balloons in the shape of a pig adorned in the Star of David at a 2013 concert.

In a recent Q&A session led by BDS movement leader Omar Barghouti, Waters compared the Israeli government to Nazi Germany, calling Israel  “the worst regime in the world,” according to Breitbart.
