As GOP Congressional leaders continue to distance themselves from Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, President Donald Trump decided to go in the other direction.
During a brief travel interlude with reporters on Tuesday afternoon, Trump threw his support behind the embattled Alabama Senate candidate, who has been accused of pursuing relationships with several women when they were ages 14 to 19 and he was in his thirties, and expressed his desire to keep someone who is “bad on crime, bad on borders, bad with the military, bad for the Second Amendment” out of the Senate.
“I can tell you — I can tell you one thing for sure,” Trump told reporters. “We don’t need a liberal person in there, a Democrat, Jones, I’ve looked at his record. It’s terrible on crime. It’s terrible on the border. It’s terrible on the military. I can tell you for a fact, we don’t need somebody that is going to be bad on crime, bad on borders, bad with the military, bad for the Second Amendment.”
“He denies it,” said Trump of Moore, when pressed by media. “Look, he denies it. If you look at what is really going on, if you look at all the things that have happened over the last 48 hours. He totally denies it. He says it didn’t happen. And you know you have to look at him also. He says, 40 years ago, this did not happen.”
Trump even left open the possibility that he might campaign for Moore.
“I’ll be letting you know next week,” said Trump. “But I can tell you, you don’t need somebody who’s soft on crime like (Dem nominee Doug Jones).”
While Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Jeff Flake would rather give the seat to a Democrat who would use his power to do irreparable damage to the country than consider the possibility that Moore might be the victim of a witch-hunt, President Trump has decided that passing tax reform for the American people, among other policy initiatives, should take priority over unproven and denied allegations.
Trump’s logic is, of course, driving the Left crazy. CNN editor-at-large Chris Cillizza laments, “So, whatever Moore’s flaws may be — and Trump doesn’t acknowledge them because, well, he believes Moore’s story that all of the women are lying — he’s still way better than a Democrat because he will vote in line with the Trump agenda … Again, that runs directly counter to the message from many establishment Republicans — that it isn’t worth sacrificing principle solely to hold control of a single Senate seat.”
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes was apoplectic:
Today, the president effectively endorsed a man credibly accused of picking up a 14 yo girl outside a custody hearing and molesting her. https://t.co/5Ai3XievG5

Joy Reid apparently believes any man who denies claims against him is lying. Oh, and Roy Moore is like Vlad Putin, or something…
Trump's standard for male guilt apparently is: "he says he didn't do it, so I believe him." Applies equally to Roy Moore and Vlad Putin.

Cillizza sums up what is likely the real concern, that Moore could win and might be hard to remove once the will of Alabama voters is heard.
“The long and short of it is this,” Cillizza opines. “Everything Trump said Tuesday afternoon about Moore and the Alabama Senate race runs directly opposite of what the leaders within the national GOP have said in recent weeks. Literally everything. The boost Moore will get from Trump’s comments will make it that much harder to remove the controversial judge from the race or to organize a serious write-in campaign against him. And Trump’s appeal to tribalism — any Republican is better than any Democrat solely by dint of being a Republican — will further worsen what is already the deepest polarization in Congress and the country in modern American history.”
