The (pipe) dream lives on.
Reps Steve Cohen (D-Tenn) and Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.), two of the most liberal members of the House, are reportedly set to introduce a new set of articles of impeachment against President Trump.
In what The Hill calls “the broadest effort yet to oust him as commander-in-chief,” neither office will specifically say what grounds will form the basis of articles, nor what Democrats will join them in their Quixotic effort.
In August, however, Cohen cited the president’s response to Charlottesville – the one where he condemned all violence no matter who conducts it – as somehow warranting Trump’s removal from office.
Gutiérrez did say they were working with constitutional lawyers and will “not leave you lacking for reason,” according to The Hill.
“It is clear to us that he is unfit to be president of the United States of America,” Gutiérrez said.
Others who have officially sought Trump’s impeachment include Reps. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) and Al Green (D-Texas). Sherman’s basis was Trump’s removal of former FBI Director James Comey even though Dems were calling for Comey’s head only months before. Green’s cites a wide range of issues including “a demonstrable record of inciting white supremacy, sexism, bigotry, hatred, xenophobia, race-baiting and racism.”
Although party leaders including Nancy Pelosi and Maryland Rep Steny Hoyer have typically discouraged outright impeachment proceedings, Gutiérrez has said he has met not such resistance this time, according to The Hill.
Finally, RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens has a truth bomb for hapless Dems busy tilting at windmills.
“House Democrats lack a positive message and are completely unwilling to work across the aisle, so instead they’ve decided to support a baseless radical effort that the vast majority of Americans disagree with. Republicans are focused on issues the middle class actually cares about, like cutting taxes and growing the economy,” said Ahrens in a statement.
