A top executive at NBC Universal was fired following accusations of sexual misconduct with multiple women.
Senior Vice President for Booking, News & Entertainment, Matt Zimmerman, who oversaw booking guests on NBC news and entertainment programs like “Today,” was terminated following accusations of “inappropriate conduct,” The Wrap reported.
“We have recently learned that Matt Zimmerman engaged in inappropriate conduct with more than one woman at NBCU, which violated company policy. As a result he has been dismissed,” NBC News said in a statement.
The 13-year veteran NBC News producer had been with the network since 2004 when he graduated from Wake Forest University, according to his LinkedIn page.
According to Fox News:
Zimmerman is widely known to be one of “Today” co-host Matt Lauer’s closest associates and confidants at the network.
He worked for years as Lauer’s personal booker, and expanded his remit to oversee all of NBC News’ guest bookings as Lauer’s power grew in the organization.
“The women came forward, and did so nervously,” TVNewser reported. “Another source says Zimmerman had consensual relationships with the women, but because he was senior management, and didn’t tell HR, he violated company policy.”
Zimmerman’s dismissal comes as another blow to the network as it recently was forced to cut ties with political commentator Mark Halperin after accusations from several women surfaced alleging sexual harassment while Halperin worked at ABC News.
NBC and NBC News president Noah Oppenheim came under fire for the decision on the original bombshell report on Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct by choosing to pass on running the story from former MSNBC host Ronan Farrow.
That story was eventually published by the New Yorker, sparking an avalanche of reaction in Hollywood and elsewhere as more allegations against Weinstein and others began to surface.
