Sessions feels the heat! AG appoints federal prosecutors to look into Clinton Foundation

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has been repeatedly criticized by Republicans and by President Trump for failing to investigate allegations of misconduct by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other Obama-era officials, is now considering investigating the Clinton Foundation and the Uranium One Deal.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has appointed federal prosecutors to determine whether a special counsel is needed to probe the Uranium One deal and the Clinton Foundation.

The Justice Department sent a letter to the House Judiciary Committee on Monday announcing the appointment of  “senior federal prosecutors” to determine whether a special counsel is needed in the case of the 2010 Obama administration decision that allowed the sale of 20 percent of America’s uranium supply, the New York Times reports.

A copy of the letter given to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va)  reads:

“This responds to your letters dated July 27, 2017, and September 26, 2017, in which you and other Members request the appointment of a Special Counsel to investigate various matters, including the sale of Uranium One, alleged unlawful dealings related to the Clinton Foundation and other matters. We are sending identical responses to the other Members who joined your letter.”

The letter goes on to say:

“To further that goal, the Attorney General has directed senior federal prosecutors to evaluate certain issues raised in your letters. These senior prosecutors will report directly to the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General, as appropriate, and will make recommendations as to whether any matters not currently under investigation should be opened, whether any matters currently under investigation require further resources, or whether any matters merit the appointment of a Special Counsel. This will better enable the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General to more effectively evaluate and manage the caseload. In conducting this review, all allegations will be reviewed in light of the Principles of Federal Prosecution.”

The letter was sent the same day Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Oh) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL) wrote a Fox News op-ed giving Sessions an ultimatum: appoint a special counsel to investigate the Obama administration’s alleged wrongdoings, or resign.

Sessions’ action on the Uranium One deal and the Clinton Foundation comes after Republicans in Congressman demanded he appoint a special counsel on these issues or resign.

“It’s time for Jeff Sessions to name a Special Counsel and get answers for the American people. If not, he should step down,” the Congressmen wrote.

It appears Attorney General Sessions got the message.
