Nikki Haley evacuated immediately after South Sudanian uprising threatens her life

Africa is a mess. Just ask Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Haley had to be evacuated from a U.N. camp for the homeless in South Sudan after locals turned violent. More than 100 protesters looted a charity office set up to help them.

“[The protesters] became upset that Haley was not able to meet with them due to time constraints,” the UN told the Associated Press.

Haley — a former Never-Trumper who became an ally after he appointed her United Nations ambassador — is in the middle of a three-country visit in Africa.

It’s ironic that locals protested her visit since the United States has given more than $11 billion in aid to South Sudan in recent years. The U.S. is the largest donor to South Sudan.

Haley said she’s disheartened the African nation has devolved into a chaotic mess despite the United States’ massive financial investments in the region to promote a democratic society.

“We are disappointed by what we are seeing. This is not what we thought we were investing in,” Haley said in statements released by the United Nations. “What we thought we were investing in was a free, fair society where people could be safe. South Sudan is the opposite of that.”

Haley said she spoke to South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, who has urged the United States to provide more aid.

“It was a very honest conversation,” Haley said. “I basically said the United States had invested well over $11 billion in South Sudan and into him, and that we were now questioning that investment.”

South Sudan has been ravaged by a bloody civil war since 2013. The conflict has displaced more than 4 million people, creating a tsunami of homelessness, poverty, and refugees.

South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011. The Sudan, which is 97% Muslim, is a key recruiting target for ISIS.

For decades, Africa has been torn apart by tribal in-fighting and systemic government corruption. While many Americans believe the United States should cut off aid to the region, it bears noting that ISIS has rapidly gained ground on the continent due to the chaos.
