Troy Gentry likely knew he was going to die in the minutes leading up to the fatal helicopter crash that claimed his life.
Troy — one-half of the country music duo Montgomery Gentry — hovered for several minutes in the air before his tiny chopper crashed in Medford, New Jersey, according to emergency dispatch audio recordings.
A dispatcher is heard alerting first responders about the situation in the audio clip obtained by The Blast (listen below).
“Apparently he [Gentry] is hovering right now waiting for the fire department to arrive,” the dispatcher said. “Mechanical issues … hovering currently. They are waiting for the fire department to arrive before they attempt a land.”

Before help could arrive, the helicopter crashed in a field, instantly killing James Evan Robinson, its 30-year-old pilot.
Gentry, 50, was removed from the helicopter’s passenger seat and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It’s unclear what caused the crash, which is currently under investigation. Troy Gentry is survived by his wife Angie McClure Gentry and his two daughters.
Touching tributes poured in from fellow country music superstars, who were distraught over Gentry’s tragic passing.
