W. Kamau Bell hosts a show called “United Shades of America” on CNN. The network describes the host as a “comedian and political provocateur” who “explores communities across America to understand the unique challenges they face.”
By definition the show is different from something like Anderson Cooper 360, but does that mean Bell is free to roam the country and, say, speak at Antifa rallies?
At last weekend’s “No Hate In The Bay” rally in Berkeley, California, the one organized to counter a non-white-supremacist “Patriot Prayer” event and included several instances of black-masked Antifa violence, Bell was given a seemingly impromptu chance to speak.

“When the Nazis leave,” Bell said, when given the microphone, “as they have left…you have to stand up for the brown people, the black people, the LGBT people, the immigrants–everybody everyday!”
Bell later sent out a series of tweets describing the events as himself being “given the chance to speak” although he “wasn’t expecting it.”
He neglected, of course, to mention or condemn the Antifa violence.
It’s worth mentioning, especially given the fact that a recent bombshell report revealed both the FBI and DHS had warned government officials of Antifa’s violent tactics since 2016. The report also disclosed that DHS had labeled Antifa’s activities as a “domestic terrorist violence.”
1/of not that many
Today at the #NoHateintheBay rally in Berkeley I was given the chance to speak by @pastormykmac. I wasn’t expecting it.

Before I knew it, I was holding the mic. As a comedian you would think I’m always ready to grab the mic. I’m not that kind of comedian.

Despite initial refusal, Judge orders FBI to make details of Clinton email probe public
But I seized the mic and said I was against white supremacy. (No news to anyone.) & The mic began to cut out. They handed me a bullhorn…

I had never used one before. (I almost mentioned it but immediately thought better of it.) I kept going & then I was handed the mic again…

At this point I thought, “I should probably just wrap this up.” & I screamed the one point that I really wanted to make…

Berkeley shouldn’t just come together when the Nazis/KKK kids/Fault Right/white supremacists show up. We should be like this everyday…
— W. Kamau Bell (@wkamaubell) August 28, 2017
At that point I screamed Berkeley should support Black ppl, Brown ppl, LGBT, & immigrants & the mic cut out & screamed “EVERYBODY EVERYDAY!”

On his Thursday night show, Fox News host Tucker Carlson excoriated Bell for appearing at the rally:
“Even if they didn’t use violence, Antifa would still be illegitimate and a threat to America. None of that seems to matter to Kamau Bell. He’s happy to stand up on stage and call his opponents Nazis. It’s not a label you use on people you want to debate. It’s a label you use to incite rage. He had to know how this would end. He did it anyway,” Carlson said.
Plenty of other Twitter users agreed and called for Bell to be fired.
