Teen posts heartbreaking Facebook message just before Harvey flood drowns her and her family

A teenage girl wrote a heartbreaking message on Facebook before the brutal Texas floods are believed to have drowned her and her family.

“No sleep & anxiety, please let this pass sooner,” Devy Saldivar, 16, wrote on Facebook around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Not long after that message, Saldivar’s great uncle Sammy piled Devy, Daisy, 6, Xavier, 8, and Dominic, 14, along with their great grandparents Manuel Saldivar, 84, and Belia, 81, into his van in an attempt to get them to safety, NBC News reported.

But the rescue attempted ended in tragedy as Sammy was the only one presumably able to escape with his life.

“The water picked the van up, and it was just floating after that,” the children’s uncle Ric Saldivar told ABC 13. “It went head-first in, and water came in real fast.”

Sammy managed to get out of his seatbelt and grab onto, what he referred to as, a twig and pull himself out of a half-open window to safety.

“When he climbed out of the van he said he could hear the kids screaming and yelling, they wanted to get out, so and that keeps playing in his head,” Ric said. “Then he seen the van go down and just go under the water.”

“Sam calls my husband and tells him, ‘They’re gone,’” grandmother Virginia Saldivar, told the Associated Press. “That’s when my husband dropped the phone and started screaming.”

“My brother-in-law saw the van go under the water,” she said. “We are devastated.”

“Devy loved animals, Starbucks and thrift store shopping. She was my sunflower, my sunshine. Xavier was the sweetest boy. He loved anything Army and playing video games,” she said of her grandchildren.

“Daisy was our princess. She was Grandpa’s girl. She loved kittens and dressing up, and watching YouTube videos,” she continued.

“Dominic was my heart. He was the most amazing, loving boy,” the distraught grandmother added. “He loved playing his trombone, watching YouTube and playing video games. He loved his family and he would defend them against anything,”

The children’s mother went out in a boat in an unsuccessful endeavor to find her children.

“She’s a mom — she just wants to find her kids,” the children’s aunt, Esmeralda Saldivar, told NBC News.

“It’s so unfair,” she said, crying. “They were good kids. They didn’t deserve to die this way.”
