VMA awards cheap gimmick using Heather Heyer’s mom and a ‘special guest’ is insulting

According to an old adage, whatever you focus on expands. So the pinheads at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards gleefully spotlighted racist groups like white supremacists and Black Lives Matter.

The awards show tried to capitalize on the Charlottesville tragedy by exploiting the grieving mom of Heather Heyer, the white woman who was killed by a 20-year-old white man on August 12.

For the inane gimmick, VMAs producers had Reverend Robert Wright Lee IV (whose ancestor was Civil War general Robert E. Lee) and Susan Bro (the mom of Heather Heyer) hand out participation trophies for the “Best Fight Against the System” music video. In a first for the MTV Video Music Awards, all six nominees won.

From the stage, Lee and Bro denounced racism and white supremacy. That’s an excellent message that everyone can embrace, right? Except, of course, the VMAs denounced only white supremacists while praising the anti-white, anti-police Black Lives Matter movement.

“We have made my ancestor an idol of white supremacy, racism and hate,” Reverend Lee said. “Today, I call on all of us with privilege and power to answer God’s call to confront racism and white supremacy head-on.”

Lee continued: “We can find inspiration in the Black Lives Matter movement, the women who marched in the women’s march in January, and especially Heather Heyer, who died fighting for her beliefs in Charlottesville.”

Fighting racism is a worthwhile cause that anyone can rally behind, but MTV’s virtue-signaling was little more than an attempt to exploit a tragedy to boost ratings and make itself relevant.

Over the years, ratings for the VMAs have plunged. Fewer and fewer people (even vapid recent college grads who are more concerned about Game of Thrones than repaying their student loans) have lost interest in the frivolous awards show.

Meanwhile, here are some facts the VMA audience can ponder while basking in their hollow virtue-signaling:

  • Jason Kessler, the organizer of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, was a Barack Obama supporter.
  • In the United States, more black people are killed by other blacks than by white supremacists.
  • The Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1865 by the Democratic Party.

Why does the media focus more on the fringe white supremacist movement than on the staggering number of African-Americans who are killed/shot every weekend in Chicago, the murder capital of the United States? Almost all are black-on-black crimes:

  • 7 dead, 25 wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago (Aug. 28)
  • 65 people shot, 9 killed in Chicago over the weekend (Aug. 21)
  • 9 killed, at least 33 wounded in weekend shootings in Chicago (Aug. 14)
  • 3 Killed, at least 29 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings (August 7)
  • 4-year-old boy among 35 people shot in Chicago weekend violence (July 31).
