Looter? Story behind viral photo of dog carrying bag of food after Hurricane Harvey

Was it resourcefulness in a time of trouble or looking to gain amid difficult circumstances?

As Gulf Coast residents in Texas emerged from safety the morning after to survey the damage from Hurricane Harley, a dog was spotted walking down the street carrying a large bag of dog food.

Tiele Dockens, of Sinton, Texas, snapped a picture of the dog — she later learned his name was Otis — and shared it on social media.

…along with the hashtag #refugee.

“It was after the storm this morning when I went to town to check damage on properties,” Dockens told Huffington Post. “Lots of people were out in their yards and streets cleaning up branches, trees and debris.”

That the story emerged on National Dog Day was all the better, suggesting that there may be a grand design to all the madness after all!

For those worried about Otis, Dockens shared that the clever dog is not a stray, but managed to get out on his street.

It’s not clear where he found the food, but the good news is Otis made his way back home… and is now prepared to weather the storm’s aftermath.

Hurricane Harvey came ashore as a Category 4 hurricane just north of Corpus Christi, with winds of 130 miles per hour, resulting in serious flooding in some areas and two deaths, but Otis gave folks a reprieve from the bad news.

The question on social media was whether the dog was being resourceful or was simply out looting… here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
