Leftists started with statues in 1930’s Spain … ended with murdered bodies of nuns exhumed and mocked

The brick and urine tossing Antifa leftists are the street thugs and shock troops of the left. Antifa’s stock in trade is violence and hate, and like their distant cousins in the Spanish Civil war of the 1930’s, there probably are very few atrocities they wouldn’t be willing to commit in the name of love and equality.

Because, despite the denials of liberals and cowardly virtue-signaling Republicans castigating Trump for daring to condemn “all violence” in Charlottesville, moral equivalence in this case really does exist. While everyone, except real Nazis and their sympathizers, of course, agrees that Nazis are bad, to ignore one bad side only emboldens the other.

Emboldening violent leftists is the absolute LAST thing we want to do, and one need only look at a few windows of history to see how that folly eventually turns out.

One window of history in particular, the Spanish Civil War of the 30’s, allows us a glimpse into what happens when their backs are truly against the wall.

Historians call it Spain’s “Red Terror,” a time from 1936 until the end of the civil war when leftist murder and violence resulted in tens of thousands of dead, including almost 7,000 Catholic clergy members.

In the aftermath of General Francisco Franco’s rise to power, a series of semi-coordinated actions on the part of various Spanish leftist groups, even helped along by members of the Soviet NKVD, murdered as many people as possible in their war against Franco. And clergy members were at the top of their list.

Historian Stanley Payne writes (emphasis mine):

During the first months of the fighting, most of the deaths did not come from combat on the battlefield but political executions in the rear–the “Red” and “White” terrors. In some cases, the murder of political opponents began more or less spontaneously, but from the very beginning there was always a certain degree of organization, and nearly all the killings after the first few days were carried out by organized groups. Murder of the political opposition was an almost inevitable result of conditions of revolutionary civil war and the constant incitement to violence, particularly by the left, in the years leading up to it. Fear was also a major ingredient. Both sides knew that they had reached a showdown and were eager to eliminate potential opposition before it was too late.

The Red terror began with the murder of some of the rebels as they attempted to surrender after their revolt had failed in several of the key cities. From there it broadened out to wholesale arrests, and sometimes wholesale executions, of people associated with right-wing groups or the Catholic church. In general, this was not an irrepressible outpouring of hatred by the man in the street for his “oppressors,” as it has sometimes been painted, but a semi-organized activity carried out by sections of nearly all the leftist groups. In the entire leftist zone the only organized political party that eschewed involvement in such activity were the Basque Nationalists.

The leftist hatred for life even extends beyond the grave, as evidenced by this gem from Mark Laskey:

However, morality only went so far in this emotionally charged social climate. Swept up by anticlerical passions, acts of desecration soon became more and more extreme. In a carnivalesque celebration of the macabre, tombs were opened and church graveyards dug up as the remains of saints, priests, and nuns were exhumed and profaned in the streets of Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, Valencia, and Almeria. In the famous Romanesque monastery of Ripoll, “the sepulchers [was] destroyed, among them that of Wilfredo el Velloso, the conqueror of Catalonia, and that of Bishop Morgades, the restorer of the famous abbey. In Vich, the tomb of the great Balmes was profaned, and people have played football with the skull of the great Bishop Torras y Bagés.” Further incidents took place in Toledo, at the Church of San Miguel, where disinterred corpses were displayed on the central altar, and Madrid, where skulls were placed on the altar of Carmelite Church. In the most notorious incident, the bodies of nineteen Silesian nuns were exhumed and exhibited in Barcelona, “flanking the doors of the church and spilling out onto the street. Here they remained for three days, during which time more than forty thousand people filed past them, sometimes silent but more often jeering.”

He’s right of course. They aren’t going to stop at statues and memorials. If you are in any way traditionalist or right-wing, they want your lives too.

And then they’ll desecrate even that.
