In their rabid attempts to rid the nation of monuments that suddenly symbolize evil and racism, protesters recently desecrated a statue in an Atlanta park.
The only problem? The statue they vandalized and tried to take down was actually called the Peace Monument.

The protesters, some dressed in black and wearing masks, were marching from Woodruff Park to Piedmont Park on Sunday in response to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia where “Unite the Right” rally demonstrators clashed with counter protesters and cost the lives of three people including Heather Heyer who was killed when a car drove into the crowd.
Apparently blinded by the need to attack something, the protesters climbed and spray-painted the 1911 sculpture of an angel standing above a Confederate soldier, guiding him to lay down his weapon, a blog on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution website said.

“I completely understand what happened,” Atlanta resident and history buff, Thornton Kennedy, said. “It’s a statue that, to the observer, looks like a Confederate memorial.”

“When the Civil War broke out, members of an Atlanta militia called the Gate City Guard were among the first to take up arms against the North. Afterward, some survivors became part of what would eventually become the Georgia National Guard. Others, who felt they were too old to fight any longer, took up the cause for reconciliation,” the AJC blog read.
“These guys realized a national healing needed to take place,” Kennedy said. “They organized a peace tour of the North, which is really remarkable. These were guys who fought in the Civil War, against Union troops. They would go meet with Union soldiers and began to repair those fissures the war created. It speaks to what we call the Atlanta spirit.”
According to the AJC blog:
A protester was hurt by metal falling from the edifice as the group tried to tear it down, AJC photographer John Spink reported Sunday night. Tensions rose as the lone policeman on the scene was surrounded by black-clad Antifa protesters shouting “pig.” Black Lives Matter protesters put themselves between the police officer and the Antifa crowd, and the gathering soon dispersed.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed issued a statement Monday, urging peace.
Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields regretted how her officers handled protesters Sunday and said there should have been some arrests made, though it was reported that only one officer was present at the scene.
“I feel like that we should have identified, removed and arrested a couple of people earlier in the march, absolutely,” Shields said in an interview with Channel 2 Action News.
