House Whip Rep. Steve Scalise and aides shot at Congressional baseball practice

Republican U.S. Majority WHIP Steve Scalise was shot during a baseball practice.

Scalise was shot in the hip and, at least, one of his aides was hit in the chest by someone with a rifle as he practiced for a Congressional baseball game in Virginia on Wednesday, Fox News reported.

Police tweeted they “believed” the gunman was in custody. Sen. Mike Lee told Fox News, however, the gunman was dead. He said a staffer used a belt as a tourniquet to stop Scalise’s bleeding.

The shots were reported on East Monroe Street in Del Ray, Alexandria police said on Twitter at 7:30 a.m. The location was near a YMCA.

Rep. Ron DeSantis told Fox News that someone asked if those practicing were Republicans or Democrats prior to the shooting.

Sen. Rand Paul told MSNBC he was thankful for the presence of Capitol police.

“Had they not been there, it would have been a massacre,” he said.

Rep. Mo Brooks described the horror of watching Scalise drag himself from second base after being shot.

“He was dragging his body away from second base to get away from the shooter,” Brooks told CNN.

“He was shot in the hip. I think it was not a life-threatening wound… There was no exit wound I could see.

“There was a blood trail about 10 to 15 yards long from where he was shot to wear he crawled to right field,” he said.

Fellow members of Congress reacted on social media.
