High school sweethearts wed in emotional bedside ceremony after she was given a devastating diagnosis

It’s a bittersweet story of love and loss for two high school sweethearts who wed this week.

Ronda Bivens, 28, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and, this week, was told she had days left to live.

Her boyfriend of 10 years, with whom she has two children, Matthew Mager, 29, decided to keep his promise to marry her before it was too late.

Although the couple couldn’t make their dream of a big wedding come true, they did marry as she laid in her bed on Thursday, Inside Edition reported.

“I told her from day one when we first found out she had cancer that ‘I know we always talked about having a big wedding.’ I said ‘if anything happens, we will get married somehow, someway,” Mager said.

The couple was joined by friends and family at Bivens bedside as they wed.

Bivens was diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma on her ankle in May 2016 and had to have her leg amputated.

She was fitted with a prosthetic leg and she, and her family, believed she was out of the woods, according to Inside Edition.

That was until she was told the cancer had spread to her lungs.

When she was told she only had days to live the couple knew it was now or never.

The pair, who have been together since Bivens was 18, was married in the home of her best friend, where she is staying under hospice care.

“I mean, it’s something that we always wanted to do together. We’d been talking about it for years. We didn’t think it would be inside my house in a small room, but we made it work,” her friend, Amanda Dalton, told Inside Edition.

The entire experience was emotional for Bivens’ new husband.

“My goal was to give her my last name before she passes. It was really emotional. I cried,” Mager said.

“I joke with her and say ‘you’re not going anywhere now. We are hitched,'” he said. “I spend most days just holding her hand and talking to her because I may not be able to talk to her tomorrow.”
